The SEM Laboratory

Welcome to the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Laboratory at the Department of Chemistry, UW-Madison! Zeiss/LEO Supra VP55 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) was originally purchased and installed by Professor Robert J. Hamers in 2003. Since then, the SEM Laboratory was generously opened to the members of the department and has continued developing to fit the users’ needs. Over the time, the Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscope (EDS) was contributed from Professor Kyoung-Shin Choi and Professor Shannon Stahl, which was a great addition to the SEM Laboratory and is available to perform semi-quantitative elemental analysis.

Who can use the SEM Laboratory recourses?

The facility’s instrumentation including the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), the Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscope (EDS), and the Sputter Coater are available for all the members of the Chemistry department. Use of these resources incurs fee payable by PIs from the Chemistry department.

How to get access to the SEM Laboratory?

The SEM Laboratory is user-based facility. For new users, you will need to attend the user trainings, then pass the exam to receive permission to access the facility independently. Users may reserve time for usage in the schedule on the shared calendar. If you wish to request the training session, please contact to the SEM Laboratory manager (Dr. Rie Fredrickson, rie.fredrickson@wisc.edu).
