Instrument training for the SEM facility

Radiation Safety 106

All users who is willing to access the SEM/EDX must pass Radiation Safety 106. It is an online course provided by UW-Madison for non clinical researchers uses of X-ray generating devices such as X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. After leaning in the course, take the quizzes. When you complete the course, you will receive the certification from the Office of Radiation Safety. Please forward your certification to the SEM Laboratory manager prior to your scheduled training date. Submission of individual user’s certificate is mandatory to attend the first training session.

Training procedures

If you are the new user to the SEM facility, you can request the training sessions to the SEM Laboratory manager (Dr. Rie Fredrickson) by filling in the form from the link below. The training sessions typically consist of two parts:

  1.  The first session to learn about the principles and operation on SEM/EDS. Print out and bring a copy of SEM user manual and a pen to take notes during the training. The first session usually takes about 45-60min. Group or individual sessions are available.
  2.  The second session to answer quizzes and take the exam. After successfully answering quizzes and passing the exam, you will receive the permission to access the SEM Laboratory independently. The second training session usually takes about 30-60min depends on your preparation. Only Individual session is available.

You do not need to bring any samples upon these training sessions. The standard sample will be provided for the trainings.  If you are a new user from the group that has permission to access the SEM Laboratory (and the group has the current active SEM users), you are welcome to visit and shadow their work in the SEM facility between the first and the second session. You will learn a lot observing your group member’s work and it will help you to be prepared for the quizzes and the exam.

When you pass the exam and receive the permission to access the SEM Laboratory individually, you can request the building manager for the lab key (graduate students and posdocs only), be added to the account on the SEM EM server, and access to the SEM user calendar for scheduling.
